Hanukkah games for adults and families: 8 nights, 8 game ideas
Hanukkah gives you eight evenings in a row with family and friends, and after the second round of latkes, the dreidel only gets you so far. Here are the dreidel rules, a game for each night, party games for adults that run on phones and a TV, and how to play with relatives in another city.
Hanukkah 2026: dates and the best nights for games
In 2026 Hanukkah begins on the evening of Friday, December 4, with the first candle, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. That means both Friday nights fall on Shabbat. If some of your family keep Shabbat, plan the screen-based games for weeknights and for Saturday night, December 5, the second candle, which is the natural night for a big Hanukkah party. Friday nights are perfect for the games that need no electricity at all: a real dreidel and a pile of gelt.
A good Hanukkah evening has a simple rhythm: light the candles, sing, eat, then play. Keep the games after the meal so nobody is checking a phone while the candles are being lit.
How to play dreidel (and an honest note)
The dreidel is a four-sided top. Outside Israel its sides carry the Hebrew letters nun, gimel, hei and shin, short for “Nes gadol haya sham”, a great miracle happened there. Israeli dreidels swap shin for pe, “po”, meaning here. The game is pure luck, which is exactly why kids love it and adults can play it with a glass in hand.
- Everyone gets the same number of tokens: chocolate coins, nuts, raisins or pennies.
- Everyone puts one token into the pot.
- Take turns spinning. Nun: nothing happens. Gimel: take the whole pot. Hei: take half the pot (round up). Shin (or pe): put one token in.
- Whenever the pot is empty, everyone antes one token again.
- Run out of tokens and you are out. The last player with tokens, or whoever has the most when the latkes arrive, wins.
8 nights, 8 game ideas

Hanukkah party games for adults
When the kids are in bed and the adults are still at the table, you want games that make people talk. Each of these runs in a browser: the TV shows the question and the results, everyone answers from their own phone.
- Party Box — three mini-games in rotation: “Who’s most likely to…”, Two truths and a lie, and emoji riddles. 3 to 16 players. “Who’s most likely to burn the latkes?” is not in the deck, but it is exactly the spirit, and our list of most likely to questions gives you more to ask out loud.
- Bluff Club — a real, little-known fact with a blank. Everyone writes a believable lie, then hunts for the truth. 3 to 12 players, and bots can fill in.
- Explain It! — teams of explainers and guessers, with words or gestures, 4 to 16 players. Perfect for a party of cousins.
- Meme Party — meme cards for up to 10 players. Check the deck first: some humor is for grown-ups only.
A warm-up: 6 Hanukkah trivia questions
Read these aloud between latkes and dessert; teams write their answers on a napkin.
- How many candles do you light over all eight nights, counting the shamash? 44 (36 plus one shamash each night).
- What does the word Hanukkah mean? Dedication, of the Temple in Jerusalem.
- Against which empire did the Maccabees revolt? The Seleucid Empire, under King Antiochus IV.
- Who started the revolt? Mattathias, a priest from Modi’in; his son Judah led it.
- Why do we eat latkes and sufganiyot? They are fried in oil, recalling the oil that burned for eight days.
- What is the eighth day of Hanukkah called? Zot Hanukkah.
Classic table games: backgammon, dominoes and more
Some of the best Hanukkah memories are a grandfather and a grandson hunched over a backgammon board. If the board is at someone else’s house, play it on two phones.
- Backgammon — in Israel it is shesh besh, and nearly every family has a champion. One on one, or a bracket for 3 to 8 players with Tournament mode. Rules refresher in our backgammon guide.
- Dominoes — 28 tiles, 2 to 4 players, bots fill empty seats.
- OCHO! — the color-and-number shedding card game, for up to 8 players. If you know UNO, you already know how to play.

Playing with family in other cities
Hanukkah is when you miss the people who are not at the table: the grandparents in Florida, the cousins in Tel Aviv, the kid away at college. Light the candles together on a video call, each at your own local time, then send a game link to the family chat. Everyone plays on their own phone with their own board, so nobody has to read a shared screen from across a room.
Plan around the time difference. In December, 7 p.m. in New York is 4 p.m. in Los Angeles and 2 a.m. in Tel Aviv. If Israel is in the mix, a weekend afternoon in the US works much better: 1 p.m. in New York is 8 p.m. in Tel Aviv. Party Box and Bluff Club are the easiest picks for a call. More formats in our games for video calls guide.
Hosting a Hanukkah party on a TV and phones
- The day before, open playparty.live/tv on the TV or a laptop plugged into it, and check the sound.
- On party night, create a room on your phone and type the 4-character code on the TV.
- Guests scan the QR code on screen, type a first name and they are in. No app, no account.
- Pick one game host who is not frying latkes, and let them run the remote.
A two-hour plan that works: candles and blessings, dinner, 20 minutes of Party Box, the trivia questions above with dessert, then dominoes and backgammon for whoever is still at the table. Start with a Party Box room and add the rest as the night goes.
